WSU Graduate Wins Audition for St. Louis Symphony Orchestra

WSU Alum Katherine Evans won a recent audition with the St. Louis Symphony and will be performing this season as second bassoon.

Katherine was a member of the Chicago Civic Orchestra from 2006-2008, and since then has been active as a freelance musician in and around the Chicago area, performing with the Elgin Symphony, Ars Viva Symphony Orchestra, and the Ann Arbor Symphony, as well as with the Chicago Symphony with whom she played on their 2009 tour of Asia. She received a Master of Music degree from DePaul University and a Bachelor of Music degree from Wichita State University. Her principal teachers include William Buchman, Robert Barris, and Nicolasa Kuster.

Ricardo Castro, piano, Alex Klein, Oboe and Richard Young, Viola are the three world-class virtuosi who bring to life this remarkably colorful and compelling niche of the chamber music repertoire. After collaborating with each other in pairs for a number of years, they finally performed together as a trio in 2006 at the FEMUSC Festival in Brazil. Other concerts followed with great success and included a highly acclaimed CD for Cedille Records entitled Poetic Inspirations.

Long tones are an important daily exercise for continual refinement of control of pitch, dynamic, and sound. We will discuss the theory and practice of these crucial exercises.

We will study these exercise using material by Marcel Tabuteau, Norman Herzberg, and Arthur Weisberg.
